Port Gregory / Hutt Lagoon

Hutt Lagoon
Port Gregory’s, Hutt Lagoon is well known for it’s pink hue. The pink colour is caused by the presence of carotenoid producing algae Dunaliella Salina. This algae is used as a colouring agent in a number of different products, from cosmetics to foods. This location is home to one of the largest production plants in the world.

We stopped in on our way through to check out if this lake really was pink, unlike the pink lake in Esperance. The pink colour is easily visible from the shore but I really don’t think you can appreciate the depth of colour until you see it from the air.

There is a good place to stop and view the lake, only five minutes or so from the turn off towards Port Gregory.

The Lynton Convict Depot is located just outside of Port Gregory and was established in 1853. It was primarily used to provide a labour force to the Geraldine Mine Site.

It’s hard to imagine living life in such a wilderness, without the modern conveniences that we have become so accustomed to.
